Bakit nga ba kinakagat ng mga atleta ang mga napanalunang gintong medalya?

Mahabang taon ng matiyagang pag-eensayo rin ang binibilang ng mga atleta bago makuha ang inaasam na gintong medalya sa bawat pagsabak sa laro.

Kaya bakit nga ba nila kinakagat ang mga gintong medalya pagkatapos mapanalunan?

Ang simpleng sagot dito ay, dahil inuutusan sila ng mga photographers, ayon sa pahayag ni David Wallechinsky, president ng International Society of Olympic Historians at may akda ng librong “The Complete Book of the Olympics.”

“It’s become an obsession with the photographers,” ani Wallechinsky.

“I think they look at it as an iconic shot, as something that you can probably sell. I don’t think it’s something the athletes would probably do on their own,” aniya pa.

Hindi sigurado ang mga Olympic historians kung sinong atleta ang nagpauso nito, naniniwala sila na kinakagat ng mga atleta ang medalya para i-test ang metal.

Kinakagat noon ng mga tao ang mga gintong barya para masiguro na totoo nga itong ginto.

“We know that only in 1912 the gold medals were real gold and that in all later Olympics the gold medals were made from silver with a gilt layer to show it as being gold,” paliwanag ni Tony Bijkerk, secretary-general ng International Society of Olympic Historians.

Pero kahit na hindi solid na ginto ang medalya, sinabi ni Bijkerk na maaari pa ring makagawa ng marka sa mga medalya, depende sa kanilang pagkagat.

Noong 2010 Winter Olympics, nasira ang ngipin ni German luger silver medalist na si David Moeller habang ginagawa ang sikat na pose habang nakatutok sa camera.

Sinisi noon ni Moeller ang mga photographer sa nangyari, “The photographers wanted us to bite into our medals at the presentation ceremony. And a corner of my front tooth broke off.”

“It wasn’t too bad and it didn’t hurt. But it is annoying when you can’t smile as you normally do. And because I want to have nice pictures and happy memories of my Olympic Games, I went to the dentist to get it repair,” dagdag pa niya.
