WANT TO TAKE HOME A NEW FURRY BEST FRIEND? ADOPT, NOT SHOP

Thinking of making a new furry addition to your family? Adopt, don’t shop!

As animal lovers, don’t tolerate the puppy mills’ appalling business practices of putting cats and dogs through unfit breeding and living conditions. These fur babies deserve a chance to have a home and experience all the love that you can give.

Here is a list of reasons why you should adopt, not shop, your new bestie.

1. BECAUSE IT’S ONE WAY TO FIGHT PUPPY MILLS

Buying a dog from a pet store, online seller, or flea market is a surefire way of supporting cruel puppy mills.

Why is it a bad idea to support these businesses? Well, for one, puppy mills are factory-style breeding facilities that prioritize profit over the welfare of dogs.

The mommy dogs that are kept there are subjected to deplorable living conditions such as cramped cages, improper medical care, and lack of human companionship. They are bred over and over for years until they are no longer profitable for breeding purposes, after which they are simply discarded—either killed, abandoned, or sold at auction.

These puppy mills will continue to operate if you continue to buy their dogs. So instead of shopping, adopt. Your conscience will be clear.

2. BECAUSE YOU’LL SAVE TWO LIVES—YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND’S AND ANOTHER FURRY PET’S.

About 7.6 million animals are entered into a shelter each year, but sadly, less than half of it makes it out alive.

In the United States alone, 2.7 million adoptable sweet pets are euthanized, simply because too many animals are entered in the shelters and too few people are willing to adopt.

You can reduce the number of put down cats and dogs if you will adopt a pet instead of buying them.

Also, when you adopt, you will get yourself a loving pet by making them a part of your family, and you will make room for another animal in the shelter, saving it from being euthanized and giving it a fighting chance at life.

Ahhhh, it sure feels great to know that you saved a life!

3. BECAUSE IT WILL COST YOU LESS

Yes, you can’t buy love, but you can adopt it from an animal shelter.

What’s more, you’re going to spend a lot less on an adopted pet that when you buy from a breeder or pet store!

Pets from breeders usually cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Adopting a pet, on the other hand, will only set you back for less than a hundred dollars for the adoption fee, depending on the shelter.

What’s more, the adoption fees usually cover the vaccination, spaying, and sometimes even the cost of microchipping!

4. BECAUSE YOU MIGHT HAVE THAT EXTRA LITTLE HELP AND SUPPORT IN CARING FOR YOUR NEW FUR BABY

First-time fur parents need not be afraid to take the plunge and take in a pet. If you don’t know the first thing about taking care of pets but you are committed to making it work, chances are, many shelters (especially the local ones) will be more than happy to assist you if you come visiting or calling for advice.

Shelters care for the well-being of the animals that they took in and they will surely want to see you be successful in taking care of your rescued pup.

5. BECAUSE MANY “PRE-OWNED” DOGS ARE ALREADY HOUSETRAINED

Adopted pets, especially if they have been in the shelter for quite some time, are usually house-trained by the time they are adopted. They probably know some basic commands as well. This means that the initial stress of getting a new pet will be lessened and it will be easier for you to introduce your new pet to your family.

Plus, your carpets and furniture will thank you as well.

6. BECAUSE WHEN YOU ADOPT, YOU CAN PICK THE DOG OR CAT THAT IS BEST FOR YOU

At an animal shelter, there will be lots and lots of dogs so you will surely find a dog that will fit your unique personality.

The shelter staff will screen the animals for health issues, temperament levels, and reactions with other animals and children before they will be allowed to be taken home. They will also assist you in picking the perfect breed that will match your family based on size, gender, color, breed, age, or temperament so you are assured that there will be no surprises in the way the new pets will act when you get them home.

Some shelters even offer “rent-a-dog” programs, trial periods, and fostering options to help you be more confident in the adoption and make sure that the pup (or cat) is right for you and your family.

7. YOU’LL CHANGE NOT JUST A HOMELESS ANIMAL’S WHOLE WORLD, BUT YOURS AS WELL

Pets will not only give you unconditional love, but they have been known to be psychologically, emotionally, and physically beneficial to humans.

Yes, they are good for your health, but adoptees can offer you so much more. They are happy, healthy pets that used to live with families and are just waiting for another family to love them just as much, if not more.

Keep in mind that these animals did nothing wrong, they are just unlucky that their hoomans ran into problems such as divorce or a move to a different city.

Taking care of a rescue pet is guaranteed to give you a heightened sense of fulfillment because you are helping an animal that needs it the most!

Rescuing an animal from a shelter means saving its life and giving that fur baby a home.

As long as they live, they will look at you as their person, their savior, and the one who gave them a happy, healthy lifestyle full of love and attention.

The Aklan Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Sunflower Road, Andagao, Kalibo, Aklan rescue cats and dogs from around Aklan and specializes in disabled pets, giving them the care and love they deserve. They also put the lovable pets up for sponsorship and adoption. The guidelines for adoption can be hound here.

For sure, the feeling you will get from knowing you did something good will be indescribably sweet and heartwarming.

And why not? You saved not only your new fur baby, but you gave every other pet in that shelter a chance to have better lives as well.

But it doesn’t stop there: by allowing yourself to love a creature that needs it the most, you will be rewarded in so many ways than one.

So what are you waiting for? Head down to the nearest local animal shelter and bring home your new family member today.
