Rappler CEO Maria Ressa, at former researcher ‘guilty’ sa cyberlibel: Korte

Hinatulang guilty sa kasong cyber libel ng Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 46 si Rappler CEO Maria Ressa at former researcher-writer Reynaldo Santos Jr. ukol sa cyberlibel complaint na isinampa ng isang negosyante.

Nag-ugat ang reklamo ng negosyanteng si Wilfredo Keng, dahil sa isang news article na orihinal na inilabas ng Rappler noong 2012 at umano’y muli na namang inilabas sa 2014.

Ang artikulong isinulat ng Rappler ay nag-uugnay kay Keng sa human trafficking at drug smuggling.

Samantala, ang naturang desisyon ay ibinaba ni Judge Rainelda Estacio-Montesa.

Lumabas ang nasabing hatol nitong Abril 3 ngunit naantala ng pagsasara ng mga korte dahil sa community quarantine laban sa COVID-19.

Ayon sa Department of Justice (DOJ) 12 taon ang prescriptive period ng cybercrime law.

Sinabi naman ni Ressa sa isang press conference, na ang kanyang conviction sa cyber libel ay isang “pivotal moment” para sa demokrasya at “free press”.

“This is a pivotal moment for the Philippines, and a pivotal moment not just for our democracy but for the idea of what a free press means,” pahayag ng veteran journalist.

“I think we’re redefining what the new world is gonna look like, what journalism is going to become. Are we going to lose freedom of the press, will it be death by a thousand cuts, or are we going to hold the line so that we protect the rights that are enshrined in the Constitution even if power attacks you directly,” wika pa ni Ressa.

Bukod sa kasong cyber-liber, nahaharap din si Ressa at ang Rappler sa separate charges na alleged tax evasion at paglabag sa anti-dummy law.
