TODAY IN HISTORY MAY 10, 1994: NAGING KAUNA-UNAHANG BLACK PRESIDENT NG SOUTH AFRICA SI NELSON MANDELA

Isa si Nelson Mandela sa mga maigting na nakibaka laban sa apartheid, isang institutionalized system kung saan nanaig ang white supremacy at racial segregation sa South Africa.

Dahil sa patuloy na pagnanais na wakasan ang apartheid, iginawad kay Mandela ang Nobel Peace Prize noong 1993.


Sa kabila ng pagkakakulong sa loob ng 27 years bilang isang political prisoner, si Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela ang naging kauna-unahang black president na nahalal sa South Africa. Opisyal na nanumpa sa tungkulin si Mandela noong May 10, 1994.

Ang pagkakaluklok na ito ni Mandela bilang pangulo ang tumuldok sa mahigit tatlong daang taong “white rule.” Inilunsad niya ang Truth and Reconciliation Commission upang imbestigahan ang mga paglabag sa karapatang pantao ng apartheid.  Pinangasiwaan din niya ang pagbabago ng konstitusyon ng South Africa.

Ang political career ni Mandela ay umabot hanggang 1999. Sa kabila nito, nanatili siyang aktibo bilang global advocate for peace and social justice hanggang sa pagpanaw niya noong December 2013.
