Itinatag ang Philippine National Red Cross noong April 15, 1947 sa bisa ng Republic Act No. 95. Ang kauna-unahang presidente nito ay si Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon na siyang unang-ginang ni Pangulong Manuel L. Quezon.


Ang Red Cross ay isang international organization na ang pangunahing layunin ay ang magbigay ng tulong sa mga nasalanta ng kalamidad. Bago pa maganap ang ikalawang digmaang pandaigdig, ang Philippine National Red Cross ay isa lamang sa mga sangay ng US Red Cross.

Sa kasalukuyan, kilala na ito bilang Philippine Red Cross, at itinuturing na isang premiere humanitarian organization sa bansa.
